Witness Where You Stand
Scripture: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” — Matthew 5:14
Reflection:
Being a witness for Christ doesn’t always mean preaching or quoting Scripture. Sometimes it just means showing up and being steady when everything around you is chaotic. In the Army, we don’t always get to choose where we’re stationed, who we serve with, or what kind of day we’re going to have — but we do get to choose how we carry ourselves through it all. That’s where our witness begins.
I’ve served in places where faith wasn’t the popular topic. Where no one’s asking about Jesus, and it feels easier to just blend in. But that’s when light matters most — not when everything’s bright, but when it’s dark and quiet. You don’t have to be loud about your faith to be clear about it. The way you handle stress, how you treat people, and how you lead under pressure — that’s what people notice.
I remember a field exercise where I was running on fumes and patience was in short supply. One of my soldiers had pushed every button I had that week, and I finally snapped. That night, sitting on my ruck, I knew I hadn’t represented Christ well. The next morning, I pulled him aside and apologized. It wasn’t a big, dramatic moment — but it opened a door. Over the next few weeks, he started asking me questions about faith. That’s when it hit me: being a witness isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence.
Truth:
Jesus didn’t tell us to be the best speakers or have it all together. He said we’re the light of the world. Light doesn’t argue with darkness — it just shines. When we live with integrity, when we serve with humility, and when we lead with love, we’re doing exactly what He asked. Whether you’re in a motor pool, a TOC, or out in the field — that’s your hill. And your light, even if it feels small, is seen.
Application:
Be faithful where you stand. Your witness starts in the small, unseen moments. Lead by example. The way you handle pressure may speak louder than anything you say.
Remember who you represent. Your uniform may say “U.S. Army,” but your life belongs to Christ.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to be a faithful witness right where I am. When I’m tired, when I’m tested, or when I feel unseen — remind me that others are watching how I live. Let my actions reflect Your character, and my presence bring Your light. Make me steady, humble, and ready to shine for You wherever You’ve placed me. Amen.
