Lead as Christ Led
Scripture: Mark 10:42-45 (ESV)
“But Jesus called them to him and said to them, ‘You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’”
Reflection:
In the military, leadership is often defined by rank, command, and control. Authority is expected, orders are given, and missions are executed. But for the Christian leader in uniform, there is a higher standard—a kingdom standard.
Jesus turns worldly leadership on its head. In Mark 10, He reminds His disciples (and us) that greatness in His kingdom doesn’t come through domination or prestige, but through humility and sacrificial service. This isn’t weakness; it’s strength under control. It’s leadership forged in the fires of love, not pride.
Military leaders are trained to lead from the front, to take responsibility, and to look out for the welfare of their troops. These values, when aligned with Christ’s example, become spiritual weapons of witness. When you serve your soldiers, advocate for their needs, and lead with compassion and justice—even when it’s unpopular—you reflect the character of Christ. And when you willingly bear the burdens of others, just as He bore ours, you don’t just wear the uniform of your nation—you wear the armor of God.
Christ didn’t avoid leadership; He embraced it with a towel and basin in His hands, washing feet, lifting heads, and carrying crosses. As a military leader, you're called to the same kind of influence: not a throne of power, but a posture of purpose.
Challenge:
As you step into the next mission, briefing, or battalion meeting, ask yourself:
- Am I leading like Christ?
- Do my troops see humility and strength in how I carry authority?
- Is my leadership making others better, or merely proving I’m in charge?
Pray today for the courage to lead as Christ did—with truth, integrity, and servant-hearted conviction.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are the Commander of Heaven’s armies and yet You stooped to wash the feet of Your followers. Help me lead like You—boldly, but with humility; decisively, but with compassion. Guard my heart from pride and remind me daily that true strength is found in service. May my leadership reflect Your love and bring glory to Your name. Amen.
