Mission-Ready Families: Serving Christ Together

Scripture Reading:

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” — Joshua 24:15 (ESV)

Military life often feels like a constant deployment—if not physically, then emotionally and spiritually. Orders change, schedules shift, and the calendar is often in the hands of someone far removed from your kitchen table. But in the middle of all that unpredictability, one thing can remain steady: your family’s mission to serve Christ—together.

Joshua didn’t say, “As for me, I will serve the Lord.” He said, “Me and my house.” That’s not just personal conviction—it’s family alignment. And for military families, this verse is a battle cry for spiritual unity and purpose.

In the military, every member of a unit knows their role. The mission succeeds when everyone is prepared, alert, and committed. The same is true for the family that follows Christ. Worshiping together. Praying over each other. Serving others as a team. These aren’t just “nice” things to do—they’re lifelines that hold your family together when the world around you is constantly in motion.

Here’s how your family can live on mission together:

  • Worship Together, Even in the Chaos: Whether you’re stationed overseas or in temporary housing stateside, make worship a family rhythm. Sing together. Watch a service. Take communion as a family. Let your kids see your devotion isn’t tied to a location—it’s rooted in Christ.
  • Stay Connected to the Church, No Matter Where You Are: Because so many churches now offer live streaming, your family can stay connected to your home church or plug into a new one online—no matter the base, the zip code, or the time zone. Don’t underestimate how this can help maintain spiritual continuity and foster community when you're far from home.
  • Serve Others as a Unit: You don’t need a title or position. Whether it’s writing letters to deployed soldiers, supporting other military families, or helping out at your chapel, when you serve together, you build something stronger than just memories—you build a legacy.
  • Pray Like It’s PT: Schedule it. Make it consistent. Make it honest. Pray about deployment orders, unit safety, school transitions, marriage stress, and upcoming PCS moves. Let your home be a command post of intercession.
  • Stay Missional, Even on the Move: Every move is a new mission field. Your neighborhood, your post, your kids’ schools—these are places God has sent you. Military families are uniquely equipped to plant seeds of the Gospel wherever they go.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what ways is your family currently worshiping and serving together?
  2. What are one or two things you can begin doing as a family to make Christ the center of your mission?
  3. Are you staying connected to a church family—even if it's virtually?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You are our Commander and our peace. Thank You for calling our family to serve—not just our country—but You. Help us to follow You as one unit, to worship together even in unfamiliar places, and to serve with joy wherever You assign us. Thank You for the gift of technology that keeps us connected to the Church, no matter where we are. Make our home a testimony to Your grace and goodness. May we always say with confidence: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Amen.
