Apple Notes Adds a Small Feature That Makes a Big Difference: Collapsible Sections

Last Updated: May 4, 2025By Tags: , , ,

Apple Notes has quietly become one of the most powerful built-in apps across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, it's getting a subtle — but very impactful — new feature: collapsible sections.

This update allows users to collapse and expand sections within their notes simply by tapping on a heading. It's a small change that delivers a big improvement, especially for anyone managing longer or more complex notes.

Here’s how it works:

If you use Heading, Heading 2, or Heading 3 styles inside your note, you can now tap the heading to fold up the content beneath it. Tap again, and the section reopens. It’s fast, intuitive, and keeps your notes feeling clean and focused.

Apple didn’t invent the idea of collapsible sections — apps like Notion, Obsidian, and Bear have had similar features — but seeing it built directly into a default app like Notes is a big deal. You don’t need to learn Markdown or use third-party tools anymore to organize sprawling notes or project outlines neatly.

What makes this even more impressive is how natural it feels. There’s no new button to press, no complicated menu to hunt through. If you’re already using Apple Notes, collapsible sections just fit right into your existing habits without any extra effort.

Personally, Apple Notes has been my "go-to" app for a long time now. It completely replaced Evernote, OneNote, and just about every other note-taking app I’ve tried. It’s fast, reliable, syncs seamlessly across all my devices, and doesn’t drown me in features I don’t need. This new collapsible sections feature only strengthens why I trust it for both everyday tasks and bigger projects.

Whether you’re a student organizing lecture notes, a professional building project outlines, or just someone managing grocery lists that have gotten out of hand, this feature keeps the clutter out of sight — until you need it.

Collapsible sections are available now in the developer beta of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, and will roll out to everyone when the public releases hit this fall.

It’s another step in making Apple Notes not just a simple app for quick thoughts — but a serious contender for structured, heavy-duty note-taking.
